Vol.2-

Mandy Marquardt

When I first rode a bike, I remember how freeing it was.  I still feel that way.  I love the bike.  It’s my therapy.  I am Mandy Marquardt and I am doing everything I can to qualify and represent the United States of America at the Olympic Games.

Ever since I was a little girl, I was dreaming about being in Olympics and now I am so close.  I remember doing some testing when I was 16 and they tested my blood sugar and my blood sugar was really high.  They gave me some insulin and my blood sugar went down and that’s when they knew that I had type 1 diabetes.  I was diagnosed at 16, so it was a huge turning point of what’s going to happen next.  There was one specific doctor and I asked him when can I go back to racing.  He told me that I would never be able to compete at a high level in my sport and that was pretty hard.  I remember telling my dad, “Hey let’s just get back on the bike and have fun and just see where it takes me.  Diabetes is something that I have control over.  Why would I stop when I am this close?”

I am going to make it all worth it for myself and create my own story and be part of that at the end of all this and inspire people living with diabetes that it is totally possible.  Boom!

As an athlete, I am really thinking about how walking is going to affect my training?  How this food is going to affect my training?  But then thinking about my blood sugars and how that is going to affect my training, whatever I eat is going to affect my blood sugars, it’s learning sometimes too to take the emotion out of it and just face what’s in front of you.  It’s my life!

I race the Max Sprints [ph].  It’s 750 meters on a 45-degree angle in a fixed gear bike with absolutely no brakes and ranging speeds up to 40-45 miles an hour.  The fastest person who crosses the line wins, so there is not a lot of room for error.  The training, the mindset, the tactics, the aero position, everything goes into it for 30 seconds.

I love the energy about the crowd when it’s just you and another opponent on the track.  The arena, it’s just an incredible feeling.  It’s like you are in for battle.  This whole experience is learning to lose, learning to win, living with diabetes and feeling with diabetes.  Showing the world that it’s possible.  It’s not all glitz and glory and it’s a process that you put everything into.  Whether that had been tennis, swimming, track runs, and cycling just really grabbed my attention and it was something that I loved.  I got to see the world and just go really fast and I love that.

Every day that I wake up, I am living my dream.  And the goal is the Olympics.  I am enjoying this entire process and journey and I am doing that with diabetes to show myself and everybody else what’s possible.
